Pedro Sotelo About Pedro Sotelo Conductor Pedro Sotelo is a conductor working in both symphonic and operatic repertoire, alongside regular engagements as an assistant conductor at European opera houses. He completed his conducting studies at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar (2019–2024) in the class of Nicolás Pasquet and Ekhart Wycik and continued his training in a master’s program (2024–2026), working additionally with Johannes Klumpp and Gregor Bühl. He first studied conducting with Alexander Gelovani in Berlin. In 2023, he was awarded a scholarship by the German Music Council’s Forum Dirigieren, taking part in concerts and masterclasses with conductors including Bruno Weil, Georg Fritzsch and Cornelius Meister. In 2025, he was selected as one of four participants in the conducting masterclass of the Bayreuth Festival. He has collaborated with orchestras such as the Jena Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de Mulhouse, the Staatskapelle Weimar, the Philharmonie Südwestfalen and the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, and served as Chief Conductor of the Collegium Musicum Weimar from 2023 to 2025. A significant part of his artistic activity lies in music theatre. He made his operatic debut in 2022 conducting Così fan tutte at the Landestheater Coburg and assumed the musical direction of a new production of Carmen at the Teatro López de Ayala in Badajoz in 2024, revived in the 2025 season. Since 2021, he has regularly worked as assistant conductor on productions including Tristan und Isolde and Wozzeck at Theater Chemnitz (Guillermo García Calvo), Samson by Joachim Raff at the Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar (Dominik Beykirch; staging: Calixto Bieito), and Parsifal in concert with the Orquesta Nacional de España under David Afkham. In 2025, he worked as assistant conductor at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona for Lohengrin under Josep Pons (staging: Katharina Wagner), returning to the theatre for the new production of Tristan und Isolde conducted by Susanna Mälkki in the 2025/26 season.
